Insignia for male wine majesties presented
On 24 July, the German Wine Institute (DWI) presented three chains of office to the public in the goldsmith's shop of the Franconian monastery in Münsterschwarzach, which men would wear as insignia if they were elected to the office of German Wine King or Wine Prince.
This could already be the case this year, as two male candidates will be taking part in the election of the German Wine Champion for the first time in September. They will represent the Rheinhessen and Middle Rhine wine-growing regions.
Insignia with symbolic power
„On the DWI side, we already opened the office to male applicants two years ago and warmly welcome the two gentlemen to the election", DWI Managing Director Melanie Broyé-Engelkes explained during the presentation. In her view, the chains of office already have great symbolic power today, even if it is not yet clear when they will be worn for the first time.
Gender is a minor matter
The German Wine Queen Charlotte Weihl emphasized that the exercise of the office depends on expertise, personality and rhetoric. Gender doesn't matter.
Learned distinguishing mark
The model for the insignia were chains of office, as worn by mayors or other high representatives of the city administration. Just like the crown of the German Wine Queen, these official insignia are primarily intended to serve as a visible sign of recognition. At events, they offer a welcome opportunity to talk to the incumbents. "The crown of the German Wine Queen and the German Wine Princesses is first and foremost a sign of recognition and a good occasion to get into conversation at an event," explained Broyé-Engelkes.
Modelled after the crown
In the handcrafted design of the chains, attention was paid to a modern and light design that interprets the design language of the crown of the German Wine Queen. Seven green tourmalines and six red garnets represent the 13 German wine-growing regions in the King's Chain and also stand for the local white and red wine. The 500-gram chains consist of 17 individual elements that are connected to each other by eyelets. The grape element at the top of the chain is based on the DWI grape logo.
Election on 20 and 26 September
The jury will first decide whether the male candidates have the chance to win the office in this year's election of the German Wine Champion during the preliminary decision on 20 September. They will then select the five candidates who will compete for the office of German Wine Champion in front of the cameras in the final in Neustadt an der Weinstraß on 26 September. If one or both of the male candidates reach the final and are ultimately elected to office, the chains of office will be used for the first time.
