A total of 225 German diplomatic missions worldwide can now select from a curated list of 25 wines and sparkling wines.

Wide diversity of grape varieties

The selection was based on an open call for entries, which attracted nearly 500 wine producers from all German wine-growing regions, each submitting one wine or sparkling wine. In a blind tasting, DWI experts first created a shortlist of 49 wines, which were then presented for the final tasting at the Federal Foreign Office (AA) in Berlin.
The 2026 recommendation portfolio includes three sparkling wines, nine Rieslings, seven white wines from other grape varieties, three red wines and one rosé. The selection is further complemented by one non-alcoholic sparkling wine and one non-alcoholic wine. Altogether, the wines originate from nine German wine-growing regions and showcase the stylistic and flavour diversity of Germany as a wine-producing country.

Use at official events worldwide

This year, the Federal Foreign Office and the DWI once again placed particular emphasis on a balanced and broadly diversified portfolio that accommodates the varied requirements and occasions of Germany’s diplomatic missions worldwide. The selected wines are intended for use at official receptions, presentations and banquets.
Diplomatic staff can make individual selections from a prepared ordering list and, if desired, place orders directly with the respective wineries. The overarching goal is to promote German wine internationally and to strengthen the visibility of German wine producers abroad.

Long-standing cooperation and professional support

For many years, the DWI has supported the Federal Foreign Office in selecting wines for official events. In addition, the institute provides expert advice to staff at German missions abroad on all wine-related matters.

Recognition for participating wineries

For participating wineries, inclusion in the German Wine Institute’s recommendation list represents a significant mark of distinction and is often accompanied by increased media attention for their wines.
