15.06.26

From June 1 to 5, 2026, a market exploration trip - initiated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Home Affairs (BMLEH) - took place in the West African countries of Nigeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast. Five German winemakers and export agencies took on the challenge of gaining a detailed understanding of these markets.

"The insight you shared on German winemaking methods and wine culture was genuinely fascinating; it's given me a lot to think about in terms of what that story could look like for the Ghanaian market”, resümmiert Teilnehmer Clinton Carson Ghana.

Conclusion of the trip: All three markets, with a combined population of more than 300 million, offer opportunities for German wines. Riesling, in particular, is a perfect match for local taste preferences, cuisine, and climate, and there are currently no Rieslings on the market. However, the risks also became clear during the visit, including delivery issues and bureaucratic hurdles.

Nigeria’s wine market is expanding

This high-profile gathering marks a significant milestone in deepening bilateral trade relations and cultural exchange between Germany and Nigeria. The event brought together leading Nigerian wine merchants, importers, distributors, and industry experts for a curated introduction to the diversity, rich heritage, and premium quality of German wines. Organized under Germany’s agricultural export promotion program, the initiative provided a strategic platform for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to explore opportunities within Nigeria’s rapidly expanding wine market.

Practical pathways for enhanced market access

Through guided tastings and expert-led discussions, attendees gained valuable insights into Germany’s renowned wine-producing regions, centuries-old winemaking traditions, and the distinctive quality standards that drive its international reputation. The forum also highlighted practical pathways for enhanced market access and stronger commercial ties.

Nigerian distributors show interes in German wines

Speaking at the event, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative:
“German wines are excellent and have a good reputation. German-Nigerian relations are very close in many ways. We would love to add this extra element and introduce German wines to the Nigerian public. That’s why there are wine producers and distributors here today.”

By facilitating direct engagement between German producers and key stakeholders in the Nigerian wine sector, the showcase successfully laid the groundwork for sustainable business partnerships and reinforced both nations' commitment to expanding bilateral trade.

About the Program: This event was conducted as part of the agricultural export promotion program of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The initiative specifically supports German enterprises in exploring new international markets and establishing long-term distribution networks abroad.
