Trends and Jubilée: Generation Riesling in Berlin

Trends in the German wine scene

For 20 years, Generation Riesling’s events have offered an ideal opportunity to learn firsthand about trends in the German wine scene and to engage in direct conversation with newcomers and potential stars of tomorrow. This also applies to this year’s presentations at the Spreespeicher Berlin, located right next to the Oberbaum Bridge.

At the walk-around tasting from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., 25 young winemakers from eight German wine-growing regions will personally present their wines—including, once again, many new faces. 

World’s largest organization of young winemakers

Visitors can taste around 150 distinctive, artisanal wines made from various grape varieties and offering a range of flavors, and make exciting discoveries along the way. After all, that is exactly what GenR stands for as the world’s largest organization of young winemakers.

During the additional masterclass held before the walk-around tasting, the topic of origin will take center stage: Under the theme “Good vineyard, all is well?”, sommelier Raphael Reichardt from Restaurant Tim Raue will present selected single-vineyard wines in various flights, highlighting why Generation Riesling is so impressive in this regard as well.

Generation Riesling

All of the more than 300 current members of Generation Riesling (GenR) are young winemakers and leading figures in the German wine industry aged 35 or younger. They stand for quality, responsibility, and the courage to break new ground—in the vineyard, in the cellar, and on the international stage. Founded in 2006 by the German Wine Institute (DWI) with the goal of providing the young wine scene in Germany with a vibrant national and international platform, GenR has now been in existence for 20 years. The Riesling that gives the wine its name is representative of the entire range of local grape varieties:  That’s because GenR members work with a wide variety of grape varieties; some don’t even have any Riesling in their lineup. What unites them all is a passion for wines with strong character. Together, they embody solidarity, shape the transformation of the international wine world, and, with their character and dynamism, define the future of German wine.
