To mark the anniversary of the German Wine Institute (DWI), wine producers, members of the press and representatives of the industry have had their say. We have summarised a small selection of the opinions for you.
DWI Current
Producer
The DWI is the most important representative of German wine at home and, above all, abroad. By far my most memorable and lasting experience with the DWI was in the summer of 2021 after the flood disaster on the Ahr! Without the outstanding support of the DWI, we would never have been able to carry out the SOLIDA(H)RITÄT campaign. I especially wish the DWI all the recognition it deserves for its tireless efforts on behalf of German wine!
Dirk Würtz, St. Antony Winery
The DWI Young Winemakers Group Generation Riesling had borne many fruits for our company's development through participation in the 1A organised trade fairs. Although I've been outgrown for over six years, I still wear the T-shirt of this probably world's largest and unique group of young winemakers every week. The tenders organised through the DWI, such as with the DFB or DB, are also really strong.

The diverse structure of the German wine industry means that the DWI has the challenging task of catering to all interests as far as possible. Over the years, I have experienced very committed DWI employees who have put their hearts and minds into promoting German wine all over the world.
Dieter Greiner, Managing Director of Eberbach Monastery
For 75 years, the German Wine Institute has successfully presented the exquisite quality and great diversity of German wines both nationally and internationally, as well as the special charm of the unique wine-growing landscapes of our 13 German wine-growing regions.
Sächsisches Staatsweingut Schloss Wackerbarth
Through the Riesling generation, I have learnt a lot about the marketing of wine for our company, but also for Germany as a wine country. Here in particular, the DWI presents itself as very young and up to date and sometimes takes unconventional paths to inspire and convince people of German wine. Young winegrowers are given the opportunity to present their wines in a simple and always excellently organised way and to reach a specialist audience that would never be reached by a single, especially young company.
Yvonne Libelli, Margarethenhof Winery, Forst
When the planned economy suddenly became a market economy and, as a cooperative, local wine lovers were no longer ripping the products out of our hands, the winegrowers' association first had to find its place in an almost unmanageable national and international market. The fact that this was finally found is thanks in no small part to the support of the German Wine Institute. It accepted our region as an equal member of the family of wine-growing regions.
Viola Werner, Managing Director, Freyburg-Unstrut Winegrowers' Association
The commitment of the German Wine Institute has made a major contribution to successfully presenting the diversity and quality of German wine both nationally and internationally. Especially in these challenging times, we see the need to continue working ambitiously on the future. In order to make German wine even more successful in all its facets, we should work together to focus even more strongly on sustainability, innovative marketing strategies and the promotion of our unique wine culture landscapes.
Dr Bastian Klohr, Managing Director, Weinbiet Manufaktur
The DWI and its employees present German wine to me the way I, as a winegrower and consumer, would like it to be. This is where the latest data meets seminar organisers who have their finger on the pulse and are passionate about the subject themselves. This is conveyed to the respective target groups through modern PR and contemporary marketing. German wine is damn sexy, professional and better than ever. This message is also conveyed.
Lukas Serman, Serman Winery
Eloquence - for me, that describes the collaboration with the DWI. Be it in the organisation of wine fairs or events, especially with the Riesling generation. My highlight was our wines in the backstage area of the Fantastic Four! We also benefited from the info trips, where we met international importers, restaurateurs and sommeliers as „Stop“ and from events with joint cooperation partners such as Rolling Stone, where music and wine are brought together.
Kathrin Mehling, Mehling Winery
As a very export-orientated company, the DWI has always provided us with advice and support when questions arise about specific foreign markets. The foreign representative offices are welcome points of contact for us, and the events abroad are valuable points of contact. Happy Birthday DWI!
Christian Ress, Balthasar Ress Winery
Competent help and support with wine exports for decades. Many friendly and dedicated people who are committed to promoting the quality and advertising of German wines at home and abroad. A big thank you for that!
Tobias Zimmer, Hirschhof Winery
For 75 years, the German Wine Institute has been travelling all over the world to present the uniqueness of our German wines and promote sales. Many thanks to the entire friendly team under the leadership of Monika Reule. For their tireless commitment, for their intuitive support of the markets, for their closeness to us producers and the always positive cooperation.
Gunter Künstler, Künstler Winery
Press
The tasks ahead for a generic wine advertising organisation in times of increasing international prohibitive tendencies are no smaller, no easier and therefore all the more important. As a winemaker's son, I wish the German Wine Institute at least another 75 years of successful work for the great products of German winemakers.
Klaus Herrmann, Project Manager Wine+Market
My wishes for the DWI were fulfilled very quickly and smoothly, both when it was staffed over 40 years ago and in recent years. The press office in particular worked like clockwork. I hope that the DWI can continue to do its work sensibly and with pleasure, unencumbered by the bureaucracy that has become so prevalent in the wine sector.
Rudolf Knoll, wine journalist
I like the fact that the DWI presents German wine in all its diversity - from the co-operative to the smallest winery - everyone gets the chance to show and present themselves. The DWI has succeeded in picking up on and reflecting trends and tendencies in the wine industry – in this way, new markets have been gained for the many different styles of wine from Germany.
Romana Echensperger, Master of Wine
The development of the DWI into a professional and internationally operating wine institute was slow at first, but then became increasingly rapid and focussed. Special campaigns such as „WeinEntdecker werden!“ with the „Tage des offenen Weines“ were marvellously suited to promoting the reputation of the DWI and German wine. More of these events please, so that German wines burn themselves into the hearts and palates of all wine lovers!
Niko Rechenberg, Gourmetwelten
In particular, the service offerings for producers and retailers– new foreign markets, sales training, marketing with the help of AI– are worth their weight in gold for anyone who wants to sell wine. Platinum is awarded to the continuous market research that the DWI conducts with the help of renowned institutes and provides valuable data material for all those who observe the German wine market - just like us journalists.

The Day of German Wine is very well organised. A great support for the sale of German wines!

I definitely connect with the DWI "Paul", when you are bothered with pairing questions again before Christmas.
