Cultivation and significance
This early-maturing grape variety is a cross between Müller-Thurgau x Siegerrebe (a new variety from 1929 with slightly reddish berries) and was bred in 1948 at the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture. Even in unfavourable years, it produces very high must weights. On the other hand, the acidity on the vine often decreases quickly in warm years.
Vinification and taste
Ortega wines, which often reach Auslese level, are characterised by fine fruit and a peachy bouquet (similar to that of the Siegerrebe). As specialities, the top Ortegas play an important role almost exclusively in direct marketing ex winery. In 2022, the planted vineyard area amounted to 351 hectares, the cultivation areas are mainly located in Rheinhessen and the Palatinate.
