Cultivation and meaning
Cultivated in 1927, the Domina grape variety with its voluminous dark red to blue-black grapes was entered in the list of varieties in 1974 and is now grown on 295 hectares, mainly in Franconia, where it finds optimal growing and weather conditions. The total vineyards planted with Domina in Germany in 2023 amounted to 333 hectares. The grapes have a very intense dark colour under good conditions, which is why the wines made from the Domina grape are often used as a cover wine for other red wines.
Maturation and flavour
The tannin-rich wines are matured in barriques or large wooden barrels and are often served with all kinds of game dishes or hearty feasts with roasts and dumplings.
