Cultivation and importance
According to new analyses from 2012, the Faberrebe is a new variety created by vine breeder Georg Scheu from Chardonnay x Müller-Thurgau at the Landesanstalt für Rebenzüchtung in Alzey in 1929. Until 2012, it was assumed to be a cross between Pinot Blanc x Müller-Thurgau. The variety is grown almost exclusively in Germany. The vineyard area is declining rapidly and in 2023 was only 185 hectares; in 2010, a total of 555 hectares was reported. The variety is mainly cultivated in Rheinhessen with 159 hectares.
Vinification and flavour
The early-ripening, high-yielding vine produces light to golden yellow, fruity and elegant wines with a well-structured acidity and a subtle muscat flavour.
